PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Forging close ties with clients while working on multiple homes is every designer’s dream. With the right chemistry, a homeowner and designer can develop a special rhythm and language, resulting in deeply personal interiors.

This magical west coast retreat near Seattle, WA. was exactly that for Lindsay Mens and Laura Fremont. Before Lindsay co-founded TOM and Laura joined our community, a Muskoka cottage (featured in the portfolio entitled LAKEHOUSE) was co-designed by them for this family with Canadian roots and cross-border wanderlust. Since then, a warm-weather escape near Phoenix, AZ, has been completed, too.

The couple was originally drawn to this Port Angeles home for its attractive fireplaces, trim and other original features. Lindsay and Laura set to work on alterations that would carefully reorient the flow and open up the house, as well as the truly great outdoor space with its spacious terraces and commanding views reaching across the Pacific all the way to Victoria BC.

The removal of several walls in the kitchen and dining areas opened up the main floor to create a more modern and convivial family gathering space, both inside and out. These clients weren’t afraid of pattern and colour, so Lindsay and Laura had the freedom to play, but within a structure that kept everything to a sophisticated coastal palette.

Misty mornings along the craggy west coast would provide colour cues. Lindsay’s signature soft layers and Laura’s love of afternoon nap-time nooks would flesh out the vibe for the client’s hillside hideaway, with its spiffy “English-cottage” bones and perfectly tree-framed views.

Working creatively in an area as naturally spectacular as this is incredibly special, but the chance to craft another beautiful home for this fabulous family is the greatest privilege of all.
