ARIZONA DESERT

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATRICK BILLER

When Lindsay Mens and Laura Fremont were tapped by longtime clients to help transform their new home in the Arizona desert, they were all in. The unique landscape was a big source of inspiration, resulting in an updated layout to take in the stunning views, fresh architectural elements and a sensitive renovation that respected the local vernacular.

The first order of business was opening up the interior flow and creating a lighter, brighter interior to capitalize on the home’s grand proportions and soaring ceilings. The colours came naturally — in more ways than one. The purple mountains in the distance, burnished reds and browns of the soil, sage-hued grasses and green agave all inspired an interior palette that truly brings the outside in.

Artwork by celebrated painters, photographers and sculptors adds a sophisticated air to the comfortable furnishings and contemporary lighting. The kitchen was opened up to the dining room and hallway to improve flow, and then totally transformed with bright white painted wood and plaster for a southwestern vibe that still says chef’s kitchen.

Guest rooms galore were already in place but Lindsay and Laura infused each one with a distinct personality, ensuring that frequent guests of this very sociable family will feel like they’re having a new experience each time. Ensuite baths got the clean sweep treatment too, with a fresh approach that makes each one feel like a visit to a desert spa.

The principal suite is a study in mixing light colours with moody earth tones for a luxurious look, but there isn’t a single sign of stuffiness. Texture and natural materials were cleverly employed here in a pleasing mix of rich panelling, natural stone and soft linens.

This desert home gives everyone exactly what they need and want: guests get a thoughtfully appointed space that authentically places them in the landscape they’re visiting, and Lindsay and Laura’s clients get a cool, comfortable retreat that makes them feel right at home in the desert.
